Cruise ship Public Health Officer (PHO) vacancy
Job Description
We are seeking an experienced and qualified Public Health Officer (PHO) to join our medical and hotel operations team onboard. The Public Health Officer is responsible for ensuring full compliance with international and company public health standards across food safety, water systems, sanitation, integrated pest management, and infection prevention onboard our vessels.
This role plays a vital part in safeguarding the health of both guests and crew, while promoting a culture of hygiene, prevention, and operational excellence.
Responsibilities
- Oversee shipboard compliance with public health standards, including disease surveillance, prevention and control of infectious illnesses, food safety, potable & recreational water safety, and integrated pest management (IPM).
- Conduct internal audits, inspections, briefings, and training sessions to ensure adherence to Vessel Sanitation Standards (VSP) and company procedures.
- Provide technical guidance and support to shipboard teams on infection control practices and outbreak prevention.
- Ensure compliance with the ship’s COVID-19 response plan and report findings directly to the Hotel Director onboard and Public Health Department ashore.
- Prepare and maintain accurate documentation, reports, and corrective action follow-ups.
- Act as a liaison between shipboard operations and relevant authorities regarding public health matters.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Environmental Health, Biological Sciences, or a closely related field (preferred).
- Experience: 2+ years shipboard experience or 3+ years shoreside experience in implementing, auditing, or overseeing public health programs.
- Certification: VSP, SHIPSAN, Infection Control, potable/recreational water facility management, or IPM qualifications.
- Strong knowledge of infection control practices and Vessel Sanitation Standards (VSP).
- Cruise industry experience strongly preferred
- English Proficiency: Advanced (spoken and written).
- Ability to lead training sessions, conduct audits, and collaborate across multiple departments.
